Sighseeing in Mexicali

The symbol of the city: the Civic Centre (Calzada Independencia and Calzada Anahuac)is the center of government institutions of the State. Among the many modern building that form it a monument honoring the first settlers or pioneers in recognition to the founders and first inhabitants of the city. Going towards the border in the Centre of the city, La Chinesca Chinatown streets welcome with its quaint shops and restaurants.

Important landmarks in this area are the neoclassical Cathedral (José M. Morelos and AV. reforma) and the border building or Garita Internacional (Blvd. Lopez Mateos and AV. colon) to which the pagoda, exemplifies the mixed race society that has shaped the cachanillas name that identifies the locals from Mexicali.

No list is complete when reviewing the city's history, without mentioning the Colorado River Land Company building (AV. Reforma and Ulysses Irigoyen) dating from 1924, is testimony to the agricultural past left by the first settlers. Don't forget to also visit the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California building (AV. Alvaro Obregón and Julian Carrillo), built in 1918, and that previously was home to the State Government Palace.

Typical Chinese food

The strong migratory wave of Chinese immigrants during the first half of the twentieth century also brought many cultural influences from the Far East, including its food, which ended up being part of the cuisine of the region.

Art & Culture

Refined and sensitive as all progressive metropolises, Mexicali is one of the main promoters of culture in the state. Example of this is IMSS theatre (AV. Zaragoza and Ulysses Irigoyen.) Phone 01 (686) 553-5616) and the State Theatre (AV. Lopez Mateos and Blvd. Milton Castellanos.) Phone 01 (686) 554 6419), both with a tight cultural agenda. To these venues add collections from the University Museum.

Reforma and l.) Also City Gallery (AV. Alvaro Obregón No. 1209) and the State fine arts Gallery (AV. Alvaro Obregón and Pedro  F. Perez s/n.). The first focuses on historical research and the dissemination of social status, while the last two galleries host local art as well as national and international exhibitions.

The Casa de la Cultura or House of culture (AV. Madero and Altamirano s/n, Tel 01 (686) 552 9169), is located in a beautiful building of 1915 construction, whose facilities taught art workshops and saved the valuable Mexicali history file. As if this were not enough, in the State Arts Centre (Calzada de Los Presidentes and CD. Victoria s/n.), the taste for aesthetic pleasure is also a steadfast temptation with exhibitions and workshops in various artistic disciplines. The Centre has the cinema film Club Les Lumiéres, library and cafeteria.

Well connected by roads and an international airport, the state capital is ready to receive visitors from everywhere. Abundant cultural supply, nightlife, exquisite cuisine and excellent quality hotels assure your return.

Family fun

The Museum Sol Nino (Blvd. Lopez Mateos and Alfonso Esquer Sández.)Has reserved a fun adventure for kids,with science, art, and fun. This has interactive thematic areas and cinema IMAX.

If it is the outdoors you enjoy , the green landscape areas, playground at Vicente Guerrero park (Blvd. Adolfo Lopez Mateos and Adolph Sandes)is the place for guaranteed leisure. A great time is also available at the Bosque y Zoologico de la ciudad ( forest and City Zoo ) located at (Alvarado s/n, Col. Nueva Esperanza.) it encloses an artificial lake and extensive meadows. With over 370 species of animals in the complex.

Sports and events

Mexicali is home of the Aguilas Pacific Mexican League baseball team with their own stadium which accommodates 19 thousand spectators where important events like the Caribbean baseball Series was also carried out in 2009 . The Soles de Mexicali, who play in the state Auditorium, a professional basketball team is popular in the same way. Calafia bullring or Calafia Plaza (Calz.) (Independencia and Calafia), for its part, offers bullfight afternoons in autumn, and charreadas stage during the winter.

If you enjoy golf, a good option for you is the 18-hole Club Campestre (Carr.) San Felipe km. 2.5.).

Outdoor enjoyment

The Rocky slopes of nearby sierras Cucapá and El Mayor, as well as the Mexicali Valley and Rio Hardy, are natural that offer excitement for the traveler and a paradise for hunting pheasant, Teal and huilota among other species.
