HOW DO I GET TO EACH MISSION SITE AND WHAT WILL I SEE?

The establishment of the Camino Real Misionero de las Californias started in the southern part of the peninsula. The missions described here are listed from north to south, allowing you to travel backwards in time, as you visit them.

Misión de El Descanso (1817-1834)
Misión Dominica de El Descanso de San Miguelito
Remains of floor tiles and faded adobe walls.

El Descanso
Located 45 Km south of Tijuana, 30 Km south of Rosarito and 60 Km to the north of Ensenada via Federal Highway 1 (toll free road), 900 m to the east of the highway.

Misión de San Miguel Arcángel de la Frontera (1787-1833)

Remains of isolated adobe walls.

De la Frontera
Located 55 Km south of Rosarito and 35 Km north of Ensenada via Federal Highway 1 (toll free road), within the town of the Mission. Around 70 Km south of Tijuana.

Misión de Guadalupe (1834-1840)
Misión Dominica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe del Norte
Natives completely destroyed the mission in the 19 th century, but some ruins of the foundations can still be seen.

Guadalupe
Located 30 Km northwest of Ensenada and 70 Km southwest of Tecate, via Federal Highway 3 (toll free road) Tecate – Ensenada, within the town of Guadalupe, in the Delegation Francisco Zarco.

Misión de Santa Catarina (1797-1840)

There are traces of the adobe wall.

Drive 110 km southeast of Ensenada via Federal Highway 3 (Ensenada - Valle de Trinidad), and arrive at the native Pai-Pai community of Santa Catarina in Valle de Trinidad. This site is 196 Km south of Tijuana.

Misión de Santo Tomás (1791-1849)

Remains of adobe rooms and traces of the foundations and outline of an old drain.

Santo Tomás
Located 34 Km south of Ensenada through Federal Highway 1 in the town of Santo Tomás; total of 134 Km south of Tijuana.

Misión de San Vicente Ferrer (1780-1833)

Remains of adobe rooms without roofs. In recent years, this has been the site of archaeological excavations.

San Vicente Ferrer Located 90 Km south of Ensenada, 110 Km north of San Quintín via Federal Highway 1. One kilometer north of the town San Vicente. Located 190 Km south of Tijuana.

There are remains of walls.

Access through Santo Domingo de Guzmán in conjunction with Federal Highway 1 and the dirt road located in the town of San Telmo, 50 Km north of San Quintín and 150 Km south of Ensenada (250 Km south of Tijuana). From there, a 4x4 vehicle is required to take the road 90 Km towards the east to the observatory. From there, you can leave the vehicle, but must hire a guide for the two and a half day trek to the mission on horse or mule.

Misión de Santo Domingo de la Frontera (1775-1839)

Remains of adobe walls still stand without a roof. There is a chapel where original figures of saints from the 18 th century are being preserved.

Located 260 Km south of Tijuana, 180 Km south of Ensenada and 20 Km north of San Quintín, via Federal Highway 1, within the town of Santo Domingo.

Remains of deteriorated adobe walls and foundations.

El Rosario
Located 62 Km south of San Quintín via Federal Highway 1, within the town of El Rosario, 380 Km to the south of Tijuana.

Misión de San Fernando Velicatá (1769-1818)

Remains of adobe walls, a drain and a rain tank.

San Fernando
Located 57 Km south of El Rosario via Federal Highway 1. Take the access road from El Progreso ranch 8.5 Km west. A total of 419 Km south of Tijuana.

Remains of adobe walls.

Santa María
Two kilometers south of Cataviña. Take the San Ines ranch to the left to cross the 30 Km distance from Federal Highway 1. A total of 481 Km south of Tijuana.

Misión de Calamajué (1766-1767)

There are adobe knolls and stone corrals.

Calamajué
Located, 561 Km south of Tijuana and 216 Km north of Guerrero Negro. On Federal Highway 1, when you get to Laguna de Chapala, take the junction with the dirt road and follow it 57 Km east of the highway towards the port of Calamajué. The mission is located 45 Km south of Cataviña.

Misión de San Francisco de Borja (1762-1818)

A cantera stone construction of quarry remains, which includes the church, missionary rooms, kitchen and a mill, as well as remains of the first adobe construction.

San Francisco
Located in ejido Nuevo Rosarito, 168 Km south of Cataviña and 93 Km north of Guerrero Negro, via Federal Highway 1. From the town of El Rosarito, take the dirt road, 35 Km towards the northwest. Located, 635 Km south of Tijuana.

Remains of the quarry construction, including the rooms, the church, a bell tower “espadaña”, and a drain that is still in use.

Take Federal Highway 1 past the State line at Guerrero Negro then drive 25 Km south, and then take the dirt road to El Arco 36 Km northwest until you arrive at the mission site.
