Other given names to this species are: De castilla rabbit, castellano rabbit, serrano rabbit, de monte rabbit or cotton tail rabbit.
These five species of rabbits are clearly different, they vary slightly in size and color, but all of them are quite similar in appearance. The rabbits are smaller than hares of the Lepus genus and they have shorter feet and ears. All the Sylvilagus rabbits have clear and short tails, as if inflated, generally in white, though some species are gray or yellowish. Hares have longer and more pointy tails.
Audubon Rabbit (Sylvilagus Audubonni): Small, living in exposed arid zones, it is generally light brown-gray with red-brown, matte back, head and leg.
Sagebrush rabbit (matorralero) (Sylvilagus bachmani): Small size, pretty small tail, rarely red head and legs. In Mexico, this rabbit lives only in Baja California where it frequents the dense cactus forests or chaparral. |
