RUSSIAN CUISINE IN THE GUADALUPE VALLEY

Russian Bread

In 1905, the first Russian colony from the Malakhanys group (Molokan) “molocanes” which means “milk drinkers”, arrived here, they were coming from Russia headed by Basilio Pivavaroff, Basilio Tolmasoff and Simeón Babichoff who were colonized the Guadalupe Valley in Ensenada .

In the beginning, 60 families settled and their main activities were growing geese and ducks, agriculture and grape and wheat harvests.

The traditions of men and women, such as making wine and preparing some food along with Russian bread, have prevailed. Currently, it is possible to visit some of the families such as Martha and Gabriel Kachirisky, which keep this tradition, they bake bread with the original Russian recipe and typical Russian food for small groups of people; likewise, the Russian Community Museum of Guadalupe Valley, offers Russian cuisine, as well as the sale of cheese, bread and custom/vintage wine.
