Olives and Olive Oil
Due to its Mediterranean weather, the Guadalupe Valley , located in the municipality of Ensenada is not just appropriate for grapevine harvesting, but also for olive harvesting. Olive harvest begins in October by gathering the green olive, and then ends with the gathering of the black olive. In order to do so, the worker climbs a high ladder, after tying around his waist what it is called “la olla”, into which he quickly places the harvested product. Upon filling “la olla”, it is emptied in some plastic cases. Depending upon the production, a worker cuts 11 to 15 cases of olive daily.
It is possible to acquire crafted cured olives from the shops located next to the road, at the “Wine Country” or at the south of the city of Ensenada by the federal highway No. 1 (Transpeninsular); you may find the industrially produced olives in the different markets and establishments, as well as in some wineries from the region.
