The Magic North of the Penninsula

Geographical Summary

Located to the Northwest of Mexico, Baja California covers an extension of  71,777.589 km2. North borders with the United States, to the Northeast by Sonora, sea Cortés in the East and the West by the Pacific Ocean.

Bordering south with our neighbor state Baja California Sur, with which it shares the peninsula of Baja California, one of the largest in the world.

The State whose capital is Mexicali, is divided into five municipalities: Mexicali, Tijuana, Ensenada, beaches of Rosarito and Tecate. According to the 2005 census, the population totaled 2, 842, 469 inhabitants. Land of steep mountain ranges and coastal valleys from North to South, the center of the State is crossed by mountain ranges, the highest point being el Monte Picacho del Diablo. (3,095 m)

Climate

In the northern mountain areas climate varies depending on altitude between cold and Mediterranean, presenting some snowfall in more higher and northern areas. Most of the year, thanks to the cold winds from the West converge with warm eastern winds the climate becomes Mediterranean  in the Northwest Coast. To the South, the rest of the State of Baja California is desert like (69 %), with little rainfall in winter and hot, and very dry summers whose temperatures can rise to 52 ° C.

Flora and fauna

In the State there are approximately 2,958 plant species, of which 686 are endemic. 109 Species found endemic 21 has been on mammals, reptiles. Birds in turn integrate a 225 species, 114 semi group endemic. On the Pacific coast is home of wolves, elephant seals and gray whales, sighting of seals are frequent in the sea of Cortés. There are countless species of fish and sea birds in any of these coastlines. Inside of the peninsula, the mountain ranges - whose altitude enables forests of pine and oak - are long horn rams Maroons shelter while the desert plains in the South are residence of the rams. The vast desert also is Habitat of coyotes, eagles, pilgrim falcons, snakes and pumas. Its landscape consists mainly of cacti, being the cardón or saguaro the most abundant element. Equally abundant are cirios and the Governadora, they are found towards the Centre and South of the State.
